Fire Prevention Week runs October 4 to 10, 2026, with a message that each of us is the first line of defence against fire at home.
Why it matters
Across Quebec, around 13 homes a day are affected by fire, and close to half of these fires start with a moment of distraction or a human error. Faulty or poorly maintained electrical equipment causes more than 23% of residential fire damage.
Simple steps
- Buy only appliances and cords that carry a recognised certification mark (such as CSA or ULC)
- Use extension cords only temporarily — choose certified cords with a built-in breaker, and have a licensed electrician add outlets if you need them permanently
- Follow manufacturer instructions on usage time and clearance around appliances
- Throw away damaged or non-compliant equipment
- Install smoke alarms and test them regularly — they remain the best early warning
